Tonight the Warriors from Van Buren come to town and challenge your hometown WMU Wolves. Wolves are putting their perfect 7-0 record on the line to face the 0-7 Warriors. On paper this game could look misleading. Van Buren has had our number the last couple of years as we have struggled to score and stop them. This year hopefully will be a little different. Our young men have put in countless hours to improve themselves physically and mentally and they have put themselves in a position to challenge for a district title. We would like to put a new number up on the banner in the gym but for us to do that we will need to take care of business tonight. Van Buren has a dynamic player in #21. He plays safety/linebacker for them on defense and on offense he has played quarterback, running back, and receiver. He was an all-state receiver last year on their district runner up team. He is about 6'2" 200lbs. and has some athletic skills. We've played good athletes before and we have had success. We just need to make sure we play fundamental football and stick to the defensive gameplan against him and their team.
For WMU, we just need to make sure we take care of the little things. Blocking angles, double teams, running sharp routes and catching the ball, make sure we hit the hole and take care of ball security as well as making good decisions in the passing game with the ball coming out on time and accurate. I like our chances to score some points tonight as we are averaging 41 points a game. Right now we are on pace to break the record for points averaged in a game. We are also on pace to break the record of points allowed. Like I said earlier our boys have worked hard and are now seeing the results of their hard work.
I would like to give a shout out to the seniors that will be playing in their last WMU Homecoming game this week. Kolt Rossiter, Sam Jennings, Collin Gerling, Warren Kreiger-Coble, Max Huston, Matthew Niebuhr, Darren Hunter, Garret Baker, Zach Davis, Darren Mertens, Neil Davis, and Beau VanAmerongen. Most of these guys have given four years to the program and some only one or two. Doesn't matter they all have been a valuable resource for this year's team success. Thank you to them and their parents. I will talk more about them during next week as it is senior week.
Once again if you can't make it tonight to the game you can listen here on the Wolvecast. I suggest wearing a sweatshirt tonight as we are finally getting some football weather for the game tonight.
For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU!
