Holy smokes Wolves Nation! That was an awesome game played on Friday night. You could use the saying, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, to describe that game.
We started out the game on defense and let a touchdown happen. On our ensuing drive we fumbled the snap and Lone Tree recovered. They then scored on a trick play and we found ourselves down 13-0 real quick. We were able to score once in the first half and give up one more heading into intermission down 20-6. At halftime we discussed how we were a better team that what we showed and now we need to come out and display our dominance. We talked about execution and playing loose and playing for each other. And that is exactly what we did in the second half. We got the ball to start the half and we marched right down and scored. We also go the two point conversion to get us within one score. Our defense stepped up and forced a punt and we were in business again. With a mix of Darren Hunter, and Kolt Rossiter running the ball and Rossiter throwing to Bryce Robison we were able to score again. We got that two point conversion and we were in business. At that point we lead 22-20 and I knew that there was no looking back. Our young men did an incredible job of staying together, staying focused and playing smart and hard. After forcing another punt we were driving in the the fourth quarter. We had 3rd and 12 and things weren't looking so good. Rossiter found Zach Davis on a seam route that converted the first down and we went on to score on a short pass from Rossiter to Davis. Those two then connected to convert the two point conversion. At that point we led 30 -20 with under 4 minutes to go. After the kickoff Lone Tree then had a huge pass play for 50 yards to get inside the 10 yard line. And boy oh boy did we have a great goal line stand. We had them at fourth and goal from the 3 and they ran a sweep to our right. It seemed like the entire defense was there to stop their running back short of the line to gain and we had the ball and they had 1 time out left. After a couple of quarterback sneaks, Lone Tree was loading the box and we ran a sweep to the outside with Robison. Bryce gained 29 yards and we were able to run 1 more qb sneak and kneel out to win the ball game. I have never been more proud of our group of young men and how they competed for the entire game. Things were looking a little bleak the first half but they showed resiliency and the ability to fight back once their back was against the wall. What a great feeling it must be for them and I know the coaching staff is elated with the effort we got from the young men on Friday night. We head to New London next Friday and they could pose some problems if we don't stay focused. I will write about that coming up later in the week. The support that Wolves Nation showed on Friday was awesome and we look forward to seeing all of you again on the next game day! For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU! Get up for gameday Wolves Nation! We've got a big one down here in Winfield tonight as the Lone Tree Lions come down to play us. This is a big game for both programs. We sit undefeated and they are 3-1 overall. This would be for the lead in the district at the half way point of the season. Whoever wins this one is in the drivers seat for the district title.
It is a big game as Lone Tree comes in with the leading running back in the district. #30, is a very good ball player that they will look to rely on. I think we have a pretty good defensive gameplan today and I like our boys' execution this week against their offense. When we have the ball we just have to relax and make plays. We are in a strategic advantage and we will look to exploit that all night. It is a big game for other reasons as well. KWQC news Channel 6 out of the Quad Cities will be down here as we were picked as the "Spotlight Game of the Week". This is a nice recognition for the boys but it could add some distractions. We have a pep rally at 2:50 this afternoon that they will be filming as well as they will be filming at the game and yours truly will be interviewed during pregame. They will be live tweeting, facebooking, snapchatting, instagraming (if that's a thing) during the game and they will have their highlight zone guys there as well. So if you're in the area you should come out and support the team tonight! You might even make the news! If you are unable to make it to the game follow KWQC for updates as well as listen to the game on The Wolvecast. You can find the link on the school website. Either way support a Wolf today, wear your red, black, white, or gray and support these young men that have worked very hard and are looking to do great things. I know Wolves Nation will be out in full force tonight! For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU! Here are most the highlights from the Danville game last Friday. We were having some technical difficulties and with the weather and delay it isn't the same high quality as usual. Enjoy, just click on the link!
We got another one Wolves Nation! After braving the elements and a weather delay the WMU Wolves were able to pull out another dominating victory to go to 4-0. Both sides of the ball were dominate in the victory over Danville.
We started the game out with a Bryce Robison interception for a touchdown and a Rossiter to Rossiter two point conversion made it 8-0 with less than two minutes gone in the game. After a 3 and out on defense the offense took over and marched the ball down the field. We capped off the drive with a Darren Hunter 10 yard punishing run with a two point conversion and we were off. 16 -0 with about 5 minutes to go in the first quarter. After the ensuing kickoff the Bears took over at their own 30. They ran two plays and on the second play their running back coughed up the ball and Sam Jennings was there to scoop it up and rumble 35 yards for a TD. We were in business. At one minute left in the first quarter the lightning and weather went crazy and we headed to the locker rooms. We resumed play at 9:00 and picked up right where we left off. There were touchdown passes from Kolt Rossiter to Bryce Robison and Garret Baker as well as a TD run by Kaleb Hagge to finish out the scoring for the Wolves. The defense had a very dominating night holding Danville to 51 total yards as well as pitching another shutout. That takes the scoring difference this year to 180-6. We are only giving up 1.5 points per game and the defensive unit has 14 takeaways already this year. We have as many interceptions at this point in the season as we did all of last season. And we are only 6 TD short of how many we scored last year. This years team is a vast improvement from last year and the coaching staff likes to credit the weight room and the mind set of these young men. They are prepared, humble, and hard-working. Not only that but they are a joy to coach. Stay tuned for the preview vs Lone Tree this week. They come in at 3-1 and 2-0 in the district. This is a very important game for both teams. Check back later in the week for the preview. Thanks to all of those that stayed out in the rain to watch and support the guys. It is very appreciated. Also thanks to those that listened on the Wolvecast. I know you were cheering from your living rooms! For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU! |
