Do what is necessary, when necessary, for as long as necessary.

We had our first Signing day ever here at WMU. Our young men were given the opportunity to "sign" their letter of intent to play for the WMU football team. We had an opportunity to have them and their parents come and share in such a great opportunity. We had a nice amount of young men. I thought that there would be a couple more but nonetheless I am excited for the young men that showed up. I've attached plenty of pictures for everyone to enjoy.

Today we received our schedule for the 2018-2019 season. We are excited about it and look forward to competing this year. Also, not shown, we are looking at a full slate of JV games, which means 8 games. This can only happen with participation by our student-athletes.

Make sure to support your WMU WOLVES! We are starting our new cycle for our young men in the weight room. We saw lot's of gains from the last cycle and we are looking to add more strength to our athletes. Spring sports are starting up with yesterday being the official first day of golf, and track started about three weeks ago and have already had one indoor meet. Talking to the track coaches, our young men performed pretty well, and you could tell that they were in the weight room. That is great to hear.
The coaches went to a clinic in Des Moines a couple of weeks ago. It was a very beneficial clinic for us as we learned plenty of skill work, drill work, and schemes. We were able to learn from some of the greatest minds in Iowa from head coach Mark Farley (UNI), Matt Campbell (ISU), and Kirk Ferentz (Iowa). We were able to spend some time in a personal setting with Brian Ferentz (Iowa) and learn about making athletes tougher, more resilient, and how to get them to work hard. It was a very good conversation. We walked away from that clinic with a great start on a defensive scheme and offensive scheme and ideas on how to implement our special teams. As the head coach I listened to a few speakers and what they shared about is what we are doing. It is proof that we are doing things the right way, it just takes time. I am confident that our young men will be ready for the season. I hope that every one is excited for the beginning of a new tradition here at WMU. I don't know if this is a downer or just news. I did some work yesterday on the weight room attendance. Of the 29 guys that I think are going out for football, there have been 26 workouts so far. That means that there has been 754 workouts that could have been done. We have completed 411 of those workouts. And we've missed 384. The 411 workouts is 54%. If we want to improve this program we need that number closer to 75%. This includes buy in from more guys, and the guys that are some-timers, need to be all-the-timers. There is a bell curve for teams and organizations. It is the 10-80-10 principle. Many of us probably know this but for example the top 10% of your organization are guys that do the extra work. They give max effort all the time, they attend everything, they are your leaders, the guys that you lean on as coaches. The middle 80% are guys that do what is necessary for the most part. They are compliant, not necessarily compelled to be great. These guys are the majority of your team. The bottom 10% are guys that no-matter what will not buy in. They are part of the team so they can wear the jersey on Friday's. They won't work hard, they'll skip reps, they are not going to be program guys. What we need is the top 10% to bring along the middle 80%. If they can get one, maybe two guys to start being a top 10%er we will be in a better place. What most leaders, coaches, or teachers to is worry about the bottom 80%. These guys won't change, they aren't compelled to change. We can't worry about them. Sometimes it might be worth having the conversation with them that this might not be for them. We, as coaches, can't worry about what people that won't change will do. We can't control emotions, attitudes, or behaviors. What we can control is creating a culture that people want to buy in to. We are making improvements here at WMU. I can feel things are changing for the best. I hope everyone else is seeing and feeling it too. Do what is necessary, when it is necessary, for as long as necessary. The following post is about our 2018 Leadership Council. Please read about these young men, what their vision for WMU football is and how we will get there. The coaching staff is excited to have these young men step up, want to learn and implement leadership skills, and start living their best and disciplined life. They are going to Earn It! |
