It was inevitable but it is here. The end of our Winter sports season here at WMU. The football boys that were out for wrestling have finished with a nice season of hard work, determination, and success as Jayce Malone brought home a conference championship for the wrestling program. The basketball team finished their season last night as they lost to Notre Dame in their first round of District play. It was a hard fought game but the Wolves came up short.
As we end our winter seasons it is time to start looking ahead to our spring seasons. I know not everyone is a track star, or golfer but one thing that is a large deficiency for our team is our lack of team speed. I would like to see as many guys out for track to help improve our team speed. I understand that it might not be everyone's favorite sport but at the same token, it will improve you for your other sports. Those of you that are out for golf and are good at it, I am not telling you to not play golf. I am letting you know that as a coaching staff we would still like to have you doing some sprints or running in order to improve your speed. As I say that I remember how this worked last year when the coaching staff gave running workouts to our non-track athletes and how they "were going to do it" and I saw two kids do ONE day. This is unacceptable. We are asking for two running workouts a week. This is not unreasonable to ask. I know many of you will say that you'll do it but being a coach for 10 years I've seen and heard this so many times. What it comes down to is how dedicated are you at becoming the best you that you can be. It isn't just for football. It's about yourself. It's about how dedicated you are to a cause that is bigger than yourself. It's about being a part of a team and doing what you can do to improve yourself and therefore improve the team. It's about finishing something you started. In no way am I asking for you to quit a sport or anything like that. I'm asking that if you are a golfer or soccer player to take 30 minutes of your day two times a week to improve your speed.
That being said. I hope that our football athletes are all involved in something this spring. It is great to have our football athletes be well rounded and experience competition all year long. We can never duplicate what real competition is during practice or training. Those of you that just finished basketball or wrestling, give your body a break (still come to weights) and then get ready for your best spring season yet. Get involved and get better. Never stop improving yourself as a student, athlete, or young man.
For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU!
