Happy Summer! We are 3/4 the way done with week one of our summer lifting. We've had pretty good numbers and really great effort. The workout the boys are doing this summer is quite possibly the hardest workout that any coaching staff has given their athletes since I have been a coach at WMU. Before when we thought the workouts were hard, those would be a warm-up for this one. I was talking to one of the upperclassman today about the workout and we agreed that if they work like they should, giving 100% effort everyday, the gains we'll see will be incredible. That being said we have to have kids showing up everyday and giving maximum effort. We start at 7:00 A.M. and the boys have done a good job of being there and ready to go. There have been some sore muscles this week. We range from guys that are going into 7th grade to our seniors to be. This week has been awesome to see the high school kids take the younger kids under their wings and show them how to work out. There has been a lot of encouragement from one athlete to another in the weight room. Coach Klopfenstein and Coach Doerring have been doing the agilities, footwork, speed and conditioning in the gym and on the track. Those two have told me that the boys are working hard and we are improving. As I stated before, our gains could be through the roof at the end of the summer for those that show up and work hard.
That being said there are those that think that they don't need to come in and lift. There are only a few of them this year. I hope they like the view because they are not only watching their teammates pass them by, they will probably be watching their teammates get the playing time come fall or winter.
We have a state champion on our team. Freshman Kaleb Hagge won the individual medalist honors and became state champion in class 1A golf this past week. What an honor and an accomplishment for that young man. The community, coaching staff, and community are very proud of him.
The baseball team has started out hot. They are undefeated and have started out 4-0 with wins over Columbus Junction, WACO, IMS, and 2014 state qualifier Lone Tree. The win over Lone Tree was a walk off winner and was very exciting. Don't forget to check out http://www.thewolvecast.com/ to listen to the games online with Coach McCarty on the call for most games. I will have the call tomorrow night as the Wolves take on Mediapolis.
I will check back in next week. Until then keep working hard and enjoying your summer. Football season is right around the corner.
For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU!
