Holy smokes Wolves Nation! That was an awesome game played on Friday night. You could use the saying, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, to describe that game.
We started out the game on defense and let a touchdown happen. On our ensuing drive we fumbled the snap and Lone Tree recovered. They then scored on a trick play and we found ourselves down 13-0 real quick. We were able to score once in the first half and give up one more heading into intermission down 20-6.
At halftime we discussed how we were a better team that what we showed and now we need to come out and display our dominance. We talked about execution and playing loose and playing for each other. And that is exactly what we did in the second half.
We got the ball to start the half and we marched right down and scored. We also go the two point conversion to get us within one score. Our defense stepped up and forced a punt and we were in business again. With a mix of Darren Hunter, and Kolt Rossiter running the ball and Rossiter throwing to Bryce Robison we were able to score again. We got that two point conversion and we were in business. At that point we lead 22-20 and I knew that there was no looking back. Our young men did an incredible job of staying together, staying focused and playing smart and hard. After forcing another punt we were driving in the the fourth quarter. We had 3rd and 12 and things weren't looking so good. Rossiter found Zach Davis on a seam route that converted the first down and we went on to score on a short pass from Rossiter to Davis. Those two then connected to convert the two point conversion. At that point we led 30 -20 with under 4 minutes to go. After the kickoff Lone Tree then had a huge pass play for 50 yards to get inside the 10 yard line. And boy oh boy did we have a great goal line stand. We had them at fourth and goal from the 3 and they ran a sweep to our right. It seemed like the entire defense was there to stop their running back short of the line to gain and we had the ball and they had 1 time out left. After a couple of quarterback sneaks, Lone Tree was loading the box and we ran a sweep to the outside with Robison. Bryce gained 29 yards and we were able to run 1 more qb sneak and kneel out to win the ball game.
I have never been more proud of our group of young men and how they competed for the entire game. Things were looking a little bleak the first half but they showed resiliency and the ability to fight back once their back was against the wall. What a great feeling it must be for them and I know the coaching staff is elated with the effort we got from the young men on Friday night.
We head to New London next Friday and they could pose some problems if we don't stay focused. I will write about that coming up later in the week. The support that Wolves Nation showed on Friday was awesome and we look forward to seeing all of you again on the next game day!
For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU!
