Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! As most of you know I am a Spanish teacher so this is a fun day for me but not my classes. We are spending some time talking about the holiday today. Fact of the day for some of you, it isn't the Independence Day of Mexico. It celebrates a battle that the Mexicans won against the French.
Last night the boys had a rain shortened track meet. They were up to the second heat of the Distance Medley when the storm ran through the Van Buren track. Football Alumni Kyle Davis earned third place in the shot and second in the disc. Good to see he got the discus figured out after two rough meets last week. Freshman Kolten Buster earned a 3rd place in the high jump. Good to see the young man earning some rewards. The only other places that the football players earned was a second place in the 4x200. Garret Baker and football alumni and touchdown receiving record holder Keaton Pallister were two main runners on that race. We had some high place winners in the distance races and those guys continue to do a nice job.
Golf practiced again last night as they hope to get to be outside for practice tonight. They have the conference meet all day tomorrow and hopefully we bring home a title. The boys are very competitive and have done a nice job of winning duals and matches. They now need to get tuned up and ready for the conference tournament. Soon I will be talking about their opportunity to play some real golf in the district and hopefully state tournament.
We continued fine-tuning our lifting and spotting technique this morning. We talked about the bench and where to put your hands for optimal power as well as keeping the feet, butt, shoulders, and head down. When were maxing out it was a lot weird with everyone trying to push their hips up. So we are trying to discourage that. We also talked about the correct way to do bicep curls. The back is not part of it, the shoulders are not part of it. A lot of time our young men are letting physics do the lifting instead of their muscles. We talked about how to do a one arm row. Not very often you see a guy doing 70 lbs for rows when they can't even do a pull up. Form, Form, Form. Hopefully we are righting some wrongs and will be able to be more efficient lifters and make more gains through our next session of lifting. Coach Klopfenstsin and I took some time today to put the workout together and we are in the process of getting them filled out for the kids.
Stay dry and keep the hail off your car. Meet you back here on Wednesday!
For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU!
