Happy Mid-Week! A beautiful day here in Winfield.
Today was the last day of testing for our lifters and athletes. We did the vertical jump and the broad jump today. It was kind of funny, I had to stand on a plyometric box and get on my toes to put tape up. Yet Garret Baker hit three inches above it. That boy can jump. Now we need to use that jumping ability to catch touchdowns and throw down some monster dunks. Guys that can jump out of the gym are a real bonus and we have a couple of them. For being a little guy Zach Davis can real jump as well. Get him to get stronger and we have ourselves a nice pair of receivers to chuck the ball to. That's not saying other guys aren't good, just saying those two have some attributes that are off the chart for us.
We are giving the athletes the next two days off because of district track and sectional golf. We are at the point in the year where we really don't need to give them the day off because we have been going 3-4 times a week during the school year. Our football players, basketball players, wrestlers, golfers and tracksters have all lifted the day before or on a competition date and been fine. We are in limbo with our programs due to a scheduling mistake and now we can afford to take these two days off and come back for the last two weeks of HIIT to end the school year. For those of you that don't know what HIIT is, it stands for High Intensity Interval Training. This means that you will do a work period of 20 or 30 seconds and a rest period of 10-20 seconds. We will have three to four rounds of the exercises and 3-4 exercises in each round. We are going to bust it and I expect all athletes to do this so that we can get a feel for the summer program. The summer program isn't a HIIT program but there are parts of it where you have to pair exercises together with timing. It is something a little different to get the kids moving, sweating, and lifting. I am looking forward to it and watching how the kids compete. Enjoy your Wednesday and watch the Cubs tonight on ESPN.
For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU!
