Good chilly Tuesday morning! It is a brisk morning out there today. I felt like we should be prepping for a football game rather than golf and track meets. Hopefully the weather turns for the better here in the next couple days for Thursday and Friday.
We have been timing 40 yard dashes and pro agility drills. Needless to say we are not fast. It was disheartening to see some of our times. Just like I said last week the iron doesn't lie, neither does the stop watch. Looking at times from some times from last year to this year we are slower almost across the board. There are a few kids that improved. The kids that wanted a speed workout to do on their own, one can tell if they did or didn't do it. They can come up with any excuse they want but the stop watch doesn't lie. A few of our athletes put up the best times for us but they aren't where they need to be. If there is one thing that we need to improve on as a team physically it is speed. Speed kills. You watch some great programs in the high school level and college level and you can see the distinction in speed and success. For example, I am an Iowa fan. Iowa has no burners. Ohio State has speed. Which one won the national championship and which one struggled to finish a season? Hopefully our athletes will dig down this summer and work as hard as they need to in order to get better and faster. We have a great program lined up so the boys need to put the work in and realize if we get after them it is because we want them to get better and nothing other than that.
We will be doing some HIIT coming up in the following weeks. It will be a change of pace to get the kids heart rate up and some movement going. I am looking forward to the change of pace and how our athletes respond to it.
That's it for today. Stay warm and enjoy the rainless day. Keep South Central Calhoun High School in your thoughts. Their school was destroyed by a tornado this past weekend. Hate hearing about things like that around Iowa.
For those before us, those of us now, and those that follow, WE ARE WMU!
